Vulturi castle
Edward has not told Bella the real reason, the reason he was almost afraid to admit to himself he was not sure he wanted her to be near Jacob. When he was alone, waiting for her to finish talking to Charlie or do those adorably human things she did so shyly when she was around him, he strove to keep the thought from the back of his mind.
If Jasper had had his own mind gift, Edward would have been run aground with concerned Cullens by now. He was that worried.
Edward knew something the Cullens did not, something he had not even told the doctor. When he had been among the Vulturi, he had been able to puncture more of their thinking than they realized. It was as though they did not fully trust, or were too incredulous regarding his gifts, and had dared him to hear them. Others had simply forgotten he was there. The inside of the Carcassonne wall of Volterra had housed them for so many years, they had grown careless with arrogance.
Aro’s questions regarding the wolf pack had not escaped him as being more than reliably well informed. Had Laurent been to see them? Edward dismissed the idea as gone from his mind almost immediately. Laurent would not have gotten within those sacred precincts. And the visitor to Bella’s room….Edward wondered for the thousandth time if they hadn’t got away from Volterra too easily.
Had Aro been putting his imprint on Bella? Edward had heard Cullen speak of such things. Edward had never trusted that Aro had shown him the full weight of his gift, for strategic reasons. To see if he, Edward, would take advantage of a perceived weakness to strike. Edward had not been interested in striking at the Volturi, he was simply angry they had allowed trackers like the one who followed Bella to operate without incident.
Edward had almost put the question before Aro directly. Why were trackers allowed to exist? Certainly the Vulturi did not need those skills. And the mess the Victoria and Laurent situation had made , how had that been allowed? Edward had gotten his questions wrapped up in the entire St. Marks’ Square crisis. When the dust settled, he had been suspicious without knowing why.
And now, upon their return, this sudden rapid acceleration of Bella’s resumption of a friendship with Jacob. Edward heard a singular noise whenever Bella and Jacob were together, a hazy buzz of unspoken connectedness that made him dread whatever it denoted. Bella seems more sure of her connection to Jacob than the one she shared with Edward. And Edward noticed that whenever Jacob’s name was mentioned, Charlie grinned, smiled, or winked.
