Edward does not seem to realize a tracker might materialize at any moment. How much of this is wishful thinking and how much of his surprise of a 17 year old without much of a dating track record? As a first date, Bella’s getting almost attacked in Seattle makes for high drama. Then, they fly away to the woods.
In other vampire lore, such as Anne Rice and Stephen King, there are “agreements” and covenants that govern such outings as when Laurent and James and the woman pop into the baseball game. Where are the ‘elders” of the world Carlisle describes?

Structural hole in the plot
When Bella gets caught in the tractor beam of James the tracker, why don’t they enlist the help of Harry, Jacob and the Indians? The beliefs of Native American Indians seem very farfetched until you think of the experience they’ve had with Carlisle and his group. Wouldn’t the Indian reservation have invented some secret Indian ways of dealing with hostile vampires?
I find this an intriguing question. Indians have a folk wisdom and mythology unrivaled in modern culture. The nearest crossover to the mix of animal totemology, spiritualism, naturalism, and existential teleology was the Mayans (And look how things turned out for them). When Harry tries to warn Bella off, does he suspect something like James the Tracker in the offing? How prepared is Bella, really, to join Edward’s coven after a few Google searches?
When Bella falls under the tracker beam, where are the comic book heroes? The “Blade” figures? Why does James need to be a “tracker’? Considering the power vampires have, why would he need such enhanced skills and motivation?

Carlisle’s group is really a coven. Calling it a clan is not appropriate. They all live by Carlisle’s rules. But when Carlisle’s group is threatened, doesn’t even he have some ringers to call in?

I sense there is more to the story of Charlie and Renee. What is behind the accepted ditziness of Bella’s mom? Charlie seems roped into a cookie cutter life, but how did Renee and Charlie hook up? I imagine there could be some supernatural tinge to Renee that makes Bella such a Twilight candidate.
