Twilight actor Michael Sheen teases extraordinary fight scene

When Michael Sheen talked to MTV News and asked if the movie would mirror the book or be a more amped up take, Sheen responded, “Oh this is very amped up, yeah. This is, I think we spent something like four or five weeks shooting that scene and it takes up a big chunk of the movie. And it’s got extraordinary things going on in it, so it certainly won’t be anticlimactic.”

Sheen’s news goes hand-in-hand with Peter Facinelli’s recent remarks about intense scenes with “like 70 people going through the works at once.”

It sounds like Twilight Breaking Dawn is going to end with a definite bang.

In order to follow the phenomenal and surprising success of “Twilight,” the makers of the second installment, “New Moon,” are definitely upping their game. That means a higher budget, improved special effects, and filming on location in Italy. Plus, they are bringing in some Oscar-caliber actors who bring a level of legitimacy to the cast, most notably Michael Sheen, who plays the vampire leader Aro, and Dakota Fanning as his follower, Jane.

Sheen and Fanning play members of the Volturi, the ancient band of aristocratic vampires who enforce the laws of their society. They have lived for centuries in Volterra, Italy, and each member has a unique ability. Sheen’s character, Aro, can absorb anyone’s thoughts just by touching them, while Jane, played by Fanning, can psychically inflict pain.

While Michael Sheen has been an established actor in Britain for over a decade, he became known in America for his layered portrayals of notable people: first, in 2006′s “The Queen” as Tony Blair, and last year as David Frost in “Frost/Nixon.” Both of those films received Academy Award nominations for Best Picture. Sheen’s not entirely unfamiliar with the realm of the undead, though. He appeared in “Underworld” and this year’s “Underworld: Evolution,” where he played a shape-shifting Lycan who was at war with vampires, ironically enough.

Dakota Fanning was only eight years old when she was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild award for “I Am Sam.” She has won two Critics Choice Awards for Best Young Actress as well. Now 15, she’s transitioning into more mature roles while also attending high school. She’ll work with Kristen Stewart again in “The Runaways” about the mid-’70s all-girl rock band.

Also joining the cast of “New Moon” as Volturi are Cameron Bright, a two-time Critics Choice Award nominee, as Alec, and Jamie Campbell Bower, who was in Tim Burton’s “Sweeney Todd,” as Caius. Graham Greene, an Oscar nominee for “Dances with Wolves,” is another new addition as Quileute tribe elder Harry Clearwater.

Production has already begun on the third movie, “Eclipse,” and it has also attracted some acclaimed new faces. Much has already been made of Bryce Dallas Howard taking over the role of Victoria from Rachelle Lefevre. Howard was nominated for a Golden Globe last year for HBO’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s “As You Like It.” Also, Columbian actress Catalina Sandino Moreno will play the vampire Maria. Moreno was the first Best Actress Oscar nominee for an entirely Spanish-speaking role in 2004′s “Maria Full of Grace.”

So why are these well-regarded actors joining the franchise that is beloved by a core audience but mostly dismissed by critics? It’s easy to say that it’s just the paycheck, but that can’t be the only reason. While “New Moon” is a bigger production than “Twilight,” the budget is still below average for a Hollywood blockbuster. It’s more about changing or expanding public perception. For Sheen, he’ll be increasing his visibility to the broader public, while Fanning gets to show that she’s maturing. Plus, they are getting the chance to become powerful, cultured, and villainous vampires, and as any actor will tell you, it’s more fun to be the bad guy

I saw a great blurb in the China Daily about Michael Sheen as Aro:

Summit Entertainment has just confirmed that Michael Sheen has been officially cast for The Twilight Saga: New Moon as Aro. Like others who have been recently added to the Twilight sequel cast.

Sheen, 40, who made his name with uncannily realistic portrayals of well-known figures in Oscar-winning films The Queen, Frost/Nixon and The Damned United, will get his biggest pay cheque yet, a reported £5million, to star in New Moon.

In New Moon, Sheen will play Aro, the leader of an Italian vampire clan called the Volturi. Director Chris Weitz confirmed Sheen’s casting to The Mail on Sunday and said he had ‘aggressively’ pursued the actor.

‘Michael’s role is so important because he’s the head of all vampires,’ he said. ‘Aro is, on the surface, a very gracious and friendly vampire, but beneath that he is a tremendous threat.’

Well, having read “New Moon” I would take exception to the characterization of Aro as friendly.

Aro seems very threatening and malevolent towards Edward. The Volturi passages I read has him weighing Edward’s fate and only Bella’s ambivalent resistance to the Jane powers and Alice’s revelations changed his mind.

I personally suspect it is Bella’s relationship to the Wolf clan in Forks that makes Aro see what Bella can pull out of the fire for the vampire cause.

Official Cast Announcement: New Moon – Twilight Sequel

Summit Entertainment has released the official and full Cast Announcement for New Moon (sequel to Twilight).

No big surprises at this point. We recently heard the Aro and Caius castings.

Some other castings:

Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner return in their roles as Bella Swan, Edward Cullen and Jacob Black (of course).

Chris Weitz (THE GOLDEN COMPASS) is the director.

NEW MOON is filming on locations in Vancouver, BC and Tuscany, Italy.

Michael Sheen Cast as Aro in New Moon

Michael Sheen has been Cast as Aro to appear in the next Twilight movie (New Moon).

We love it ! As underworld fans know Michael as the good-guy werewolf (Lycan) Lucian in the Underworld.

That means he has plenty of acting experience in the Vamps/Wolves area. He will make one oustanding Aro (leader of the Volturi).

Sheen has also appeared in Frost/Nixon and The Queen.

Great job – can’t wait for the New Moon trailer coming next month.
